Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) 2024, the Adventure Travel World Summit, organized by the World Tourism Organization (WTO). Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) and its allies, will take place in an exceptional destination that promises to be a monumental meeting point for the global adventure tourism community. Under the theme "Connection," the summit will pay tribute to the geological uniqueness of the host country, a natural bridge between the Americas that has influenced global climate and biodiversity: Panama.
The choice of this destination for ATWS 2024 is no coincidence, but the result of an ambitious plan for sustainable adventure tourism, presented in 2022, which includes significant investment in infrastructure, guide training and collaboration with local communities. This privileged setting will attract professionals committed to promoting regenerative and responsible tourism worldwide.
In this context, at La Mano del Mono, we feel very honored to contribute with our experience after collaborating and cooperating, for more than 15 years, with community-based and indigenous adventure tourism companies.
Regeneration: What we don't know, that we don't know.
Mauricio Martinez MiramontesATTA ambassador, will facilitate a session entitled "Regeneration: Mindset and tools for connecting with and learning from indigenous communities in tourism.". In Latin America more than 80% of biodiversity is found in the territory of less than 7% of the continent's population, who happen to be indigenous peoples. Coincidence? or is there something we can learn from their way of relating to each other?
Faced with the new global challenges of effectively conserving 30% of LATAM's marine and terrestrial natural areas by 2030, while we seek to stay below the 1.5 degree temperature increase, La Mano del Mono, seeks to share the most valuable of what we have learned over these 15 years of working with indigenous peoples in tourism: "Regeneration: An old paradigm that we are just learning".
This approach not only promotes responsible tourism, but also fosters deep and meaningful collaboration with indigenous peoples, ensuring that travel experiences are authentic and enriching, while honoring and preserving biocultural heritage.
Through an interactive session that promises a deep dive into questioning the current paradigms from which we relate to tourism and exploring new ways of creating adventure tourism, Mauricio takes us through a river of playful exercises, business case analysis and personal reflections, and practical tools that lead to a deep connection with the indigenous mindset in tourism. This regenerative approach is crucial to creating authentic, profitable and visitor-ready tourism experiences while respecting and protecting living cultures and their ecosystems.
