A new era for tourism in natural areas
"Technology not only improves management, it also strengthens trust and transparency with local and visiting communities."
On August 4, 2009, the Local Hands Network held a virtual meeting under the title "Technology that transforms tourism into conservation"bringing together natural area managers, conservation specialists and community stakeholders to share real-world experiences on how digital tools are changing the course of tourism for positive impact.
From the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve to the Mexican Whale House Graythe panelists shared how the implementation of technology, especially through the software Reserva Naturahas been key to improving visitor management, optimizing revenues and ensuring ecosystem conservation.
Real cases: when technology becomes an ally
Before the advent of these tools, visitor records were complicated, revenues were unclear and pressure on ecosystems was increasing. Today, with the help of platforms such as Reserva Natura:
- Tourist flows can be better distributed in order to avoid saturation of natural areas.
- Communication with visitors is more effective, improving their experience and their respect for the rules of the site.
- A guaranteed greater transparency and control in the management of resources generated by tourism.
"Today we can know who is coming, when, how many, and make sure that visit helps preserve what they love to come and see." - Paola Díaz, Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
Challenges, lessons learned and next steps
The guests agreed that the use of technology also involves challenges: connectivity, staff adaptation and understanding of how new tools work. However, the benefits far outweigh the initial difficulties.
The session concluded with an open invitation to participants to continue to share their learning, join the network's communication channels and to continue betting on technology that strengthens conservation from the local level.
"The platform comes to simplify absolutely everything for us." - Angélica Rivera, Mexican Gray Whale House
