Viñedos del Jagüey: An Example of Sustainability in Viticulture

Wine tourism, wine tourism or enotourism is an activity that consists of visits to vineyards, wineries and festivals with the main intention of experiencing the wine culture of a region, also this type of activities gives the opportunity to live unique experiences such as the production process, the phases of the tasting in an innovative way or even identify some organoleptic characteristics of wine.

However, very few times have we asked ourselves how this activity can generate positive impacts on the lands where it is carried out? An example that answers this question is "Viñedos del Jagüey", a wine company located in the municipality of Ezequiel Montes, Querétaro.

Jagüey Vineyards, an example of sustainable practices

This project demonstrates that wine tourism not only favors rural practice, but goes beyond the objective of increasing food production in a sustainable way and improving food quality, because everything that surrounds it has a purpose such as the shade net, which covers the vines to protect them from extreme climates and in the case of the olive trees they function as a prevention barrier against pests and, although they are still young, in the future there are plans to work to obtain olive oil from them.

Another hallmark of the site is its organic vegetable garden, which aims to provide agro-ecological ingredients to the wine bar This activity fosters the local-tourist relationship by making them part of the planting process and giving them a vegetable as a gift to encourage the creation of vegetable gardens at home.

Is wine tourism transitioning to regenerative tourism?

In addition, there are three factors that characterize "Viñedos del Jagüey:

1. Analysis of your system: You can feel it from the moment they start explaining the reason for everything on the site, from the location of the vineyard, which is on the road so it is easy to find, to the varietals they work with or the pine trees that are dedicated to strengthening and regulating the climate of the cistern area.

2. Create benefits that nurture the site: provides job opportunities to locals, contributing with this action a motive of identity with wine tourism.

3. Strengthens the relationship with the tourist, the company and the locality: the sense of belonging transmitted by the collaborators, who by the way are natives of the area, generates in the visitor an adhesion with the place, and at the same time a connection with themselves, as they feel like one more social actor in the nature that surrounds them.

The above are pillars that integrate regenerative tourism, which although it is still in the process of transition in sectors such as tourism, there is an approach to its conceptualization, as indicated by the Monteholiday Ecotourism who describes it as "tourism that seeks to avoid negative impact on destinations, while aiming to improve and regenerate local resources, as well as contribute to the fair distribution of local income [...] attempts to improve the natural state of an area, i.e., to leave it better than how we found it."

According to the above, "Viñedos del Jagüey" implements actions that allow it to be in tune, not only with sustainable practices, but also motivates future tourism companies, regardless of their branch, to lean towards sustainable tourism and thus strengthen their actions towards regenerative. .

It is important to remember that as people we have the ability to take care of our resources and thus ensure that all the elements of a system are used responsibly, as can happen in the wine industry. We also have the ability to achieve not only economic prosperity but also social and environmental prosperity without compromising the needs of current generations and benefiting future generations. In this way, it is encouraged to undertake projects with this look where the local economy is promoted, local identity is valued and regeneration is worked.
